Carlplatz Duesseldorf

Palma de Mallorca has its Santa Catalina market, Munich its Viktualienmarkt and Düsseldorf its Carlsplatz. It is the oldest still operated market place in Düsseldorf, first opened over 100 years ago. It is located south of the old town, and is the city’s most important market square. More than 60 market stalls offer freshness, quality and variety in one place. You will find anything from exotic fruit or regional vegetables to freshly caught fish, expert meat and poultry, oven-fresh bread and pastries, cheese or unusual delicacies, sweets or coffee specialties. Moreover, there’s a magnificent selection of flowers and plants. The Carlsplatz has a special flair. Beautiful flowers and a light smell of various spices surround the people strolling through the market. You may see all kind of people, whether it’s a group of people enjoying a glass of wine or busy women doing the grocery shopping.

Last Friday I have experienced a culinary highlight! At a large table, in the middle of the market, I met a few interesting people and was able to taste different mouthwatering delicacies. It is really worth taking some time to fully explore the market and all its details. Growing up nearby I’ve known the market for many years now of course, however, I was never really aware of all those special stands, that proved to be absolute specialists in their field. For instance, on one side there’s a flower stand run by an elderly lady in her 80s in the 4th generation, while on the other side you can find a very modern stand selling innovative Lakrids (choc or cocoa covered licorice) by Scandinavian Johan Bülöw, which, by the way, turned out to be especially delicious! ☺

A big thank you goes to L’Etoile PR for the wonderful hours, as well as to Tina Husemann for the perfect organization and invitation!
